What is the GAE Visa?
The Government Authorised Exchange (GAE) visa, previously known as Tier 5 (Temporary Worker) GAE, allows non-UK nationals to come to the UK for temporary work experience, training, research, or fellowship through an approved exchange scheme. It's designed to facilitate knowledge sharing and professional development.
Unlike other work visas, the GAE route is sponsored by an authorised exchange body, not a direct employer.
Eligibility Requirements
- Sponsorship from an approved exchange body
- Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS)
- Sufficient maintenance funds (£1,270)
- Valid passport
- Tuberculosis test (if applicable)
- Criminal record clearance (if required)
What Activities Are Permitted?
Work experience – Gain practical experience in your field
Training placements – Structured training programmes
Research or fellowship – Academic research or fellowship
Overseas government language programmes – Language teacher training
Duration & Extension
- Maximum stay: Up to 12 months (24 months for research or fellowship)
- Extension: Generally not permitted under most GAE schemes
- Settlement: ❌ No settlement path
Important Restrictions
- Cannot fill a permanent job vacancy
- Cannot switch to this visa from within the UK (except for certain academic and university student categories)
- No recourse to public funds
- Cannot bring dependants in most cases (some exceptions apply)
