Opportunity Card ('Chancenkarte')
Points-based job search without a job offer.

What is the Opportunity Card?

The Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte) is a new residence permit introduced in 2024–2025 that allows qualified professionals from non-EU countries to come to Germany to look for a job. Holders can also work up to 20 hours per week in trial employment ('Probebeschäftigung') and complete training for the recognition of their foreign qualification [8†L7-L11].

The card is issued for a maximum of 12 months, provided you can support yourself financially during this period. The required amount is at least €1,091 per month, proven via a blocked account (Sperrkonto) [8†L47-L49].

Points System (Minimum 6 Points)

If your qualification is not fully recognised in Germany, you can still apply through the points system.
Points are awarded for:

  • Recognition of qualification (4 points) – if your foreign qualification is partially recognised.
  • Language skills (up to 3 points):
    • B2 German: 3 points
    • B1 German: 2 points
    • A2 German: 1 point
    • B2 English: 1 point
  • Professional experience (up to 4 points) – 2 points for 5 years, 3 points for 7 years.
  • Age (up to 2 points): under 35: 2 points, 35–40: 1 point.
  • Connection to Germany (up to 2 points): previous stay, spouse/family in Germany.

You need at least 6 points to be granted the Opportunity Card.

  • Work trials and part-time work – up to 20 hours per week.
  • Recognition of qualifications – you can complete training for recognition.
  • Change of job – you may switch to a different job seeker or work permit.
