German Job Seeker Visa (for academics)
For university graduates without a job offer – up to 6 months.

Eligibility

  • University degree: A university degree recognised in Germany (or comparable).
  • Sufficient financial means: Proof of funding for the duration of your stay (approx. €6,546 for 6 months at €1,091 per month) – usually via a blocked account (Sperrkonto).
  • Health insurance: Valid health insurance for the entire stay.
  • Job search prospects: You must demonstrate realistic chances of finding a qualified job in Germany (e.g., through language skills, professional experience, and a well-prepared CV).

After Finding a Job

Once you have secured a qualified job offer (matching your degree), you can switch to a residence permit for work (e.g., EU Blue Card or Skilled Worker Visa) without leaving Germany. You must apply for the change at the local Foreigners' Office ('Ausländerbehörde') before your job seeker visa expires.

Work permit during job search: The job seeker visa does not permit any employment. You can only job hunt. However, you are allowed to participate in job interviews and attend trade fairs.
