Spousal Open Work Permit (SOWP)
Work for Any Employer While Your Partner Studies or Works

Open work permit – Allows you to work for any employer, in any occupation, without a job offer.

Eligibility – Spouse of a Skilled Worker

  • The principal worker holds a work permit valid for at least 16 months
  • The principal worker is employed in a TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3 occupation (or specific TEER 4/5 in labour shortage areas)
  • You are legally married or in a common‑law relationship

Eligibility – Spouse of an International Student

  • The student holds a valid study permit
  • The student is enrolled full‑time in a PGWP‑eligible program at a DLI
  • The program is at least 8 months long

Important 2025 Changes

  • SOWPs are now not automatically granted to spouses of all foreign workers – the principal’s occupation and permit length matter.
  • For student spouses, the student’s program must now be on the new PGWP eligibility list.
  • Already existing SOWPs remain valid until expiry.

How to Apply

1. Principal applicant obtains their work permit or study permit
2. Gather proof of relationship (marriage certificate, shared lease, etc.)
3. Apply online together with the principal OR separately after they have the permit
4. Spouse can work immediately upon arrival (or while waiting if already in Canada)
