Immigration Salary List (ISL)
What It Means for Your UK Work Visa

Important: The ISL replaced the Shortage Occupation List in 2024. The rules are different – read carefully.

What Is the Immigration Salary List?

The Immigration Salary List (ISL) identifies specific occupations where the standard 'going rate' salary is lower than the general threshold. It replaced the Shortage Occupation List (SOL) in 2024.

Key difference from the old SOL: Being on the ISL does NOT lower the general minimum salary of £41,700. It only allows you to use a lower 'going rate' if that occupation's standard going rate is below the general threshold.

How the ISL Works (With Example)

Example Occupation: Laboratory Technician (SOC 3111)

  • Standard 'going rate': £28,300 per year
  • General visa threshold: £41,700 per year
  • Without ISL: You would need £41,700 (higher threshold applies)
  • With ISL: You only need £28,300 (the going rate applies)

If the going rate is already above £41,700, being on the ISL provides no advantage.

Who Benefits from the ISL?

You benefit if:

  • Your occupation is on the ISL, AND
  • The standard 'going rate' for your occupation is below £41,700

If your occupation's going rate is already above £41,700, the ISL offers no salary advantage.

Common Misconceptions About the ISL

Myth: "ISL lowers the £41,700 threshold."
❌ False. The £41,700 general threshold remains.
Myth: "Any occupation on ISL qualifies for lower salary."
❌ Only if the going rate is below the general threshold.
Fact: The ISL list is smaller than the old SOL.
Many occupations were removed.
Fact: You still need sponsorship.
ISL does not remove the sponsor requirement.
