Freelance & Self‑Employment Visa
For 'Freiberufler' (liberal professions) and business founders.

Eligibility (Two Main Tracks)

  • Freelancer ('Freiberufler'): Suitable for liberal professions (e.g., doctors, lawyers, architects, artists, journalists, IT consultants). You need at least two binding letters of intent (LoIs) or contracts from German clients, a business plan, and proof of sufficient financial means (blocked account). Minimum age: 45 years.
  • Self-employed / business founder (Gewerbe): For trades and commercial businesses (e.g., restaurants, retail stores). You need a viable business plan, proof of sustainable livelihood, and relevance for the German economy (regional interest). Registration of a commercial trade ('Gewerbeanmeldung') is required.

Path to Permanent Residence

Initial residence permit for self-employment is usually granted for up to 3 years. After 3 years of successful self-employment that generates sufficient income, you may be eligible for a settlement permit ('Niederlassungserlaubnis'). The Federal Employment Agency (BA) must approve the employment conditions.
