IT Specialist Visa
For experienced tech professionals without a formal degree.
If you do not have a formal university degree, you may still qualify for a work visa as an IT specialist if you have at least 3 years of relevant professional experience in the last 7 years and a job offer with a minimum salary of €55,770 (2026) [7†L27-L39].
Eligibility
- Work experience: At least 3 years of IT experience in the last 7 years, at an academic level.
- Salary threshold: The job offer must offer a gross annual salary of at least €55,770 for 2026 (55% of the annual contribution assessment ceiling for the general pension insurance scheme). If the salary is lower, the Federal Employment Agency reviews each case individually.
- Qualification equivalence is not required – formal education is not a condition, but recognition of your professional experience (e.g., through reference letters) is essential.
Path to Permanent Residence
IT specialists with a work visa (Section 18b AufenthG) have the same permanent residence options as other skilled workers: after 5 years with sufficient German language skills (B1), you can apply for a settlement permit ('Niederlassungserlaubnis').
Family reunification: Spouses and minor children may join you. Spouses are generally allowed to work immediately.
