German Language Course Visa
For language learners preparing for study or work (Section 16f Residence Act).
Eligibility
- Language course: Enrolment in an intensive German language course (minimum 18 hours per week) at an accredited language school.
- Sufficient financial means: Proof of funding through a blocked account (Sperrkonto) with at least €1,091 per month for the duration of the course.
- No employment permitted during the language course.
- The course must be a preparatory measure for a subsequent stay (study or work).
- Maximum duration: 12 months (can be extended to 12 months max).
Path to Study or Work
Subsequent residence permit for study or work: After your language course, you can directly apply for a residence permit for study or work in Germany if you meet the respective eligibility criteria (e.g., admission to a German university, a concrete job offer, or recognition of vocational qualifications). You must apply for the change of purpose at the local Foreigners' Office ('Ausländerbehörde') before your language course visa expires. Employment is not permitted during the language course.
