Research Visa
For scientists and researchers (Section 18d Residence Act).

Eligibility

  • Hosting agreement: A hosting agreement ('Aufnahmevereinbarung') with a recognised research institution (e.g., university, Max Planck Institute, Fraunhofer Society).
  • Qualification: University degree or equivalent qualification.
  • Sufficient financial means: The research position must offer adequate remuneration (at least 75% of the contribution assessment ceiling).

Path to Permanent Residence

EU Blue Card for researchers: Many researchers qualify for the EU Blue Card, which offers a faster route to permanent residence. If you hold a research visa, you can work as a self-employed researcher, apply for a settlement permit ('Niederlassungserlaubnis') after 5 years, or switch to the EU Blue Card if you meet the salary requirements.

Family reunification: Spouses and minor children may join you. Spouses are generally allowed to work immediately.
